This outline is flexible enough to use with ANY section 2 prompt, yet it also shows off a range of English language skills.

Example:

Describe a holiday that you celebrated recently.

You should say:

-What the purpose of the holiday is

-Who you celebrated it with

-Why this holiday is important to you

And describe some activities that you did as part of the celebration

I am going to talk about my birthday. While it is not technically a holiday, I would like to talk about it because it is a day I recently celebrated. So, in the past, I used to spend an entire week celebrating this day. For example, I would go out to dinner and drinks with different friends and family in the days surrounding my birthday, and I always made it a very big deal. However, as I’ve gotten older, this has changed. My most recent birthday was spent sharing a quiet meal with my husband. I think my ideas of how a birthday should be celebrated have shifted along with my ideas of what is important in life. I now value my relationship with my husband over socializing with many people. I believe this will continue into the future, and I look forward to celebrating more birthdays with the family my husband and I create. So, that’s why I wanted to discuss my recent birthday - it is an example of how I’m maturing as a person.

Practice using this Section 2 outline with sample prompts until it becomes second nature. You will walk into your IELTS test with the confidence and know-how to ace the long turn.
